When an unusual irritation turns up in the genital area, we can’t help but think the worst. A pimple, for example, can be easily mistaken for herpes and cause much undue stress. If you have a vaginal or penis pimple that you think may be herpes, you may want to take a look for symptoms that may signify a herpes outbreak.

Symptoms of herpes typically start about 2 to 20 days after contact and can continue for up to two weeks. The first episode is usually the most severe since most people have never before been exposed to the virus. The infected area is usually painful and may itch. Other symptoms may include swollen lymph nodes, headache, fever, lower back pain.

Herpes start out looking like little red bumps, later turning into painful blisters, which usually crust over, scab, and then heal. Herpes usually form in clusters, and pimples are more likely to be the loner in the affected area. One can usually see white puss in the area of a pimple. Herpes usually do not contain any sort of puss. When herpes are squeezed more of a clear, watery liquid comes out than an infected puss common in pimples. Although outwardly, a pimple may appear to be herpes, you usually need not worry when puss is squeezed out of the affected area.

If your symptoms continue to bother you (or worsen) or you are just generally worried about it, it’s best to make a visit to the doctor’s office. If you are diagnosed with herpes there are many great medications on the market that can treat the problem. There are also great acne medications on the market if your breakout, likewise, turns out to be pimples.
