Dry skin can be very uncomfortable and an eye sore. Depending on the extent of dryness, it can even lead to the upper layer of skin actually cracking. This can be painful. Dry skin is not something that should be ignored. Some people who are suffering from dry skin do not realize that alleviating the effects of dry skin does not have to be difficult or expensive in every case.

Hormones, dry climate, and excessive exfoliation are among the many sources that can dry skin can derive from.

The most common and least expensive treatment for dry skin is obviously a moisturizer lotion. Moisturizers are classified into 2 different categories, depending upon the way they treat the dry skin.

Moisturizing lotions that fall into the first category treat dry skin by preserving the moisture that is naturally already present in the skin. Vaseline is an example of this kind of moisturizer. Dry skin care can be treated from moisturizers like this because they reduce or eliminate the loss of natural moisture that the skin has, holding it in. They can easily be found at the nearest drugstore, grocery store, or probably even a convenience store and they are not expensive.

Secondly, the other category of moisturizers works by adding more moisture to the skin than what is already present. They pull moisture from the environment into the skin, therefore adding to the moisture directly into the skin and reducing the dryness. These are especially recommended for use where the climate is normally humid. Moisturizers in this category are called humectants, and they are not a “greasy” moisturizer. Greasy type moisturizers are not very effective for dry skin care.

Simply using a moisturizer is not enough for proper dry skin care. There is also the matter of using it correctly. It is best to cleanse the skin before using them, and apply them while the skin is still a bit damp. It is ok to exfoliate your skin, as it removes the dead skin cells, but be careful not to over do it. When you are cleansing your skin also ensure that you are not using a cleanser that contains soap because it has a drying effect.

Dry skin care should also include taking care not to overly expose your skin to the sun.
Avoid too much direct exposure to sun by using a hat or umbrella. Ensure that you are applying a sunscreen. You can also find moisturizers that will have sunscreen protection already built in. This is nice because by simply using your moisturizer you are also protecting your skin from the sun.

Dry skin care does not have to be difficult or expensive in every case. Simply using the above information and implementing it you can greatly reduce any dry skin normally. Of course, there are extreme cases that may require more. If your dry skin persists you may want to ask your doctor about it.
